The History of Development

The State Key Laboratory of Applied Microbiology Southern China was founded on the basis of the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Microbial Culture Collection and Application. In 2013, it was approved as the first of two State Key Laboratories in China by the Ministry of Science and Technology of People’s Republic of China.

Laboratory Personnel

There are 55 staff members in laboratory, of whom 40 are permanent and 15 are temporary. Among the permanent staff, 36 researchers, 4 administrative and technical personnel, include 29 researchers with doctoral degree and 6 with master’s degree, 18 researchers senior title and 12 with deputy senior title.

Main Research Fields

We have three main research fields:

Tropical and Subtropical Microbial Resources and their Utilization

Environmental Microorganisms and Regional Ecological Safety

Detection and Control of Harmful Microorganisms

Academic Contribution

The Laboratory has made a great academic contribution:

We have established the largest microbial germplasm resource bank and herbarium in South China.

We have established a technological system for environmental pollution treatment based on the regulation of microbial metabolic networks, and contributed to Chinese ecological civilization construction.

We have solved the significant problems and overcome the key technological difficulties of food safety in China

The research on the anti-bacterial effect and mechanism of the new anti-bacterial materials is at the international leading level.

Communication and Cooperation

We have cooperated with foreign organizations:

We have studied the physiological functions of edible and medicinal fungi with Prof. Yang Baihua of University of Toronto.

We have developed the Whole-cell Microbial Sensor with Dr. Li Xianqiang of Panomics. Ltd in U.S.A.

We have licensed the patent The Technology of Rapid Agarwood Formation to companies, such as Depu Biotech Resources, in Malaysia.

We have built platform of co-construction with Aarhus University to study the Electro-microbiology.
